What is better, cardio or weight training for weight loss? The answer to that question depends on who you ask. If you ask a someone who likes to run or ride their bike, then cardio will probably be best in their mind. Similarly if you asked a bodybuilder or fitness model, they’ll probably tell you that weight training is where it’s at if you want a lean physique.
My opinion on cardio or weight training for weight loss is that both types of physical activities will help you burn calories and improve your health. But if I had to pick one over the other I would say that weight training is the best option when trying to lose weight and here’s why.
If done correctly weight training will elevate your heart rate as much or more then cardio, especially when training your legs, back and chest. I’ve had clients burn more calories during weight training sessions then they would ever burn in an hour of cardio. So really, weight training kills two birds with one stone while cardio alone will not give you the same benefits as weight training.
Lifting weights builds muscle which is an active tissue. Active tissues require more calories then other tissues like fat (adipose tissue). This means that by adding just a few pounds of muscle one could substantially boost their metabolism. Even the slightest increase in calories burned each day can make a big difference if you’re trying to lose weight.
I could go on and on about the many benefits of weight training, like how it can improve bone density and prevent osteoporosis. Or how lifting weights just a few times a week can help an elderly person maintain their mobility. There is a very long list of reasons as to why you should make resistance training part of your weekly routine. But I want to focus on the question; cardio or weight training for weight loss.
As you can probably tell, I’m a big believer in lifting weights to lose weight, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t think cardio has it’s benefits too. Cardio is a great way to burn a ton of calories and improve the health of your heart and lungs. And yes cardio will help you lose weight, you don’t have to lift weights to lose weight if you really don’t want to, just realize that it might take a little longer to get the results you want.
The best option for weight loss is to use the right amount of both cardio and resistance training. A successful weight loss program should recommend some kind of physical activity on most days. A great way to incorporate both types of activity into your weekly schedule would be to alternate between weights and cardio each day, taking 1 or 2 days off as you need to.
The struggle for most people isn’t whether to do cardio or lift weights, it’s finding the motivation to exercise on a daily basis. So really the answer to cardio or weight training for weight loss depends on you. If you hate lifting weights, then you’ll never stay with it long enough to lose weight, the same is true for cardio.
